They are part of a passive fire protection system to reduce the spread of fire or smoke between Compartments and to enable safe evacuation from a building.
Fire door sets need to comply to AS1530.4 and AS1905.1 and are required in all types of infrastructure such as tele communication buildings, power stations, tunnels, hospitals and many more types of buildings.
Fire doors have an FRL (Fire resistant Level) which is a grading period, represented by the time in minutes without any failures.
For AS1530.4 fire test failure criteria expressed as:
- Structural Adequacy
- Integrity
- Insulation
The FRL of a fire door is expressed as follows -/60/30, -/120/30, -/180/30 and -/240/30.
As fire doors are not a load bearing element the first criterion Structural adequacy is not required.
When the fire doors is installed it then needs to comply to AS1905.1
